As the body count rises, it doesn't seem to get them any closer to finding out what happened to Oscar。This was another great puzzle where at times, everything and nothing seemed to be connected。 I managed to figure out how some of the pieces fit together but missed the most important one, the identity of the killer。 Both detectives are dealing with some fairly heavy personal issues too, and though not a cliffhanger, there is one thread that I hope plays a role in the next book。Could you read this as a standalone? Yes, but I enjoyed The Tenant and The Butterfly House and both provide more background about the main characters, including one that doesn't play a large role, but an important one when it comes to solving this baffling case, Esther。 。。。more

The Harbor is Katrine Engberg's third entry in her delightful Jeppe Kørner and Anette Werner series last year。 I've listened to the first two books and this latest is another great listen。Jeppe and Anette are detectives with the Copenhagen Police。 Their latest case involves a missing teenager, at first assumed to be a runaway by the police。 But a cryptic note left behind hints at something darker。 And a discovery at a local waste facility ramps up their caseload。Engberg's plot is well written an The Harbor is Katrine Engberg's third entry in her delightful Jeppe Kørner and Anette Werner series last year。 I've listened to the first two books and this latest is another great listen。Jeppe and Anette are detectives with the Copenhagen Police。 Their latest case involves a missing teenager, at first assumed to be a runaway by the police。 But a cryptic note left behind hints at something darker。 And a discovery at a local waste facility ramps up their caseload。Engberg's plot is well written and not easy to solve。 There are a number of seemingly disparate threads will keep the listener guessing。 The Harbor moves along at a good pace as clues are uncovered。 The rapport between the two partners is very well written。 I quite enjoy the repartee between the two。 Alongside some great plotting are well drawn characters。 Engberg has given all her characters rich personal stories that have evolved over the course of the books。 The personal storylines are believable and relatable and I was eager to catch up。And the third piece for me is the reader。 The narrator is Graeme Malcolm, one of my favorites。 He has an accent that works for many locales。 His voice has a lovely, unique, gravelly tone to it and it's quite pleasant to listen to。 He depicts the emotion and tone of both characters and plot lines easily with his voice。 He also has a somewhat sardonic tone at times that perfectly suits the verbal sparring and inner thoughts of the lead characters。 The speed of the reading matches what's going on in the book。 He speaks clearly and is easy to understand。Tara F。 Chace was the translator for this title。 She's done a good job as the narrative doesn't feel or sound choppy, but flows easily instead。 Fans of character driven police procedural mysteries such as Susan Hill's Simon Serrailler or Deborah Crombie's Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James series would enjoy this series。 。。。more

This is book four in the Kørner and Werner Danish detective series。The partners work well together。 They have been together long enough to know each other very well。 Each detective struggles with personal things outside of the job。 Annette has a small child and a stay at home husband。Jeppe has a relationship with a colleague from work that has 2 daughters。 He doesn’t know if he is ready to be a parent or stepparent yet。This case revolves around the disappearance of a young, high school aged boy。 This is book four in the Kørner and Werner Danish detective series。The partners work well together。 They have been together long enough to know each other very well。 Each detective struggles with personal things outside of the job。 Annette has a small child and a stay at home husband。Jeppe has a relationship with a colleague from work that has 2 daughters。 He doesn’t know if he is ready to be a parent or stepparent yet。This case revolves around the disappearance of a young, high school aged boy。 Things get complicated when two teachers from his school are found dead, and possibly murdered。 The boy’s family isn’t exactly as morally upright as they first seem。 Money and fraud seem to be underlying problems in the family。The interwoven plots are well written and will keep you guessing till the end of the book。 I highly recommend Katrine Engberg。 When you finish this one, you should go back and read her first three books! 。。。more

This was another cracking story in the Jeppe Kørner and Annette Werner series。 It all boils down to greed! Something does not feel right about the whole kidnapping scenario to Detectives Korner and Werner。 On top of this, Oscar’s family does not seem to be too open to giving out information。Then it is discovered the Oscar’s father’s boat and boat key are missing from the harbor dock in which it is kept。 Could Oscar have taken the boat? Or someone else? Was Oscar trying to get away from someone? As the clues begin to pile up, it is discovered by interviewing some of the teachers at school that Oscar’s best friend, may have been sexually abused, and Oscar’s brother Victor had been bullying children at school which was squashed somehow and by someone。 But what could Oscar’s involvement have been? Then another body is found。 Are too many questions being asked? Could they be getting close to what really happened? As the two detectives are in a race to save Oscar from whatever his fate, and with the family seemingly hiding things, they try to piece together Oscar’s last day and what could have happened。In the meantime, Korner who has fallen in love is practically living full-time with his girlfriend and her two children, a situation which seems to be giving both of them anxiety as Korner who may be a brilliant detective has no idea about children。 And Anette, who had a surprise baby with her husband a short while ago, is not sure she loves him anymore and suddenly feels tempted in ways she never imagined。As they race to find Oscar, what Korner and Warner discover are chilling lies, secrets and skeletons which have hidden for years。 The Harbor has it all! Surprising suspects and an amazing ending with more a personal storyline of the detectives and their friends lives which any reader of the series is now invested in。The Harbor is intriguing, messy and juicy!Thank you #NetGalley #Gallery/ScoutPress #TheHarbor #KatrineEngberg for the advanced copy。 。。。more

The Harbor is book 4 in a Nordic noir series from this author, and is beautifully translated from the original。 (Note: book three has not yet been translated to English)。 The story revolves around a teenager who has gone missing, but things get complicated as people close to the case are found dead。 The police must answer the question, "what was the motive" to solve the case。 There were a lot of characters and several stories within stories, but it was the descriptive framing that took my breath The Harbor is book 4 in a Nordic noir series from this author, and is beautifully translated from the original。 (Note: book three has not yet been translated to English)。 The story revolves around a teenager who has gone missing, but things get complicated as people close to the case are found dead。 The police must answer the question, "what was the motive" to solve the case。 There were a lot of characters and several stories within stories, but it was the descriptive framing that took my breath away。 The descriptions of the Copenhagen harbor are so vivid you can see almost see the boats bobbing on the water, the islands dotted in the distance。 There is a lot of technical detail on the operation of the recycling center, but it was fascinating to learn about the Amager Resource Center (ARC), a waste-to-energy plant that integrates a ski slope roof and rock climbing face to become part of a proposed entertainment complex。 I was also intrigued with the story of the behind the scenes auction fraud, the history of death masks, and the way the author tied these into the storyline。 I also highly recommend The Tenant, the first in the series from Katrine Engberg。 Thanks to NetGalley and Gallery/Scout Press for an advance reader's copy。 。。。more
Faith Hurst-Bilinski,
A solid entry into a solid series。 Nordic thrillers are slow burning and I think that having some connection with the characters helped with the pacing of the book。 This could definitely have been a standalone but I think it is hard to connect with these characters。 For me it took two books。
V,
Detectives Korner and Werner are on a new case in atmospheric Copenhagen, Denmark。 I have so enjoyed this Scandinavian crime drama series。 Never been to any of the places described and the writing makes me want to hop a flight。 A good story transports the reader, this did that for me and I hate cold and rain! The personal lives of the characters continues to evolve with Anette as a new mother。 Her twenty-five year marriage to Svend is in a slump and she experiences an unexpected attraction to a Detectives Korner and Werner are on a new case in atmospheric Copenhagen, Denmark。 I have so enjoyed this Scandinavian crime drama series。 Never been to any of the places described and the writing makes me want to hop a flight。 A good story transports the reader, this did that for me and I hate cold and rain! The personal lives of the characters continues to evolve with Anette as a new mother。 Her twenty-five year marriage to Svend is in a slump and she experiences an unexpected attraction to a person of interest in the case。 The investigation spans seven days in April with Jeppe Kørner and his partner, Anette Werner, trying to find a missing fifteen-year-old boy, Oscar Dreyer-Hoff。 There is a note which quotes author Oscar Wilde。 Is it a possible suicide note or totally unrelated? Was he taken or did he just run away? Meanwhile, there is a grisly discovery at the Amager Resource Center (ARC), fancy name for the new energy conscience garbage facility。 The engineer, Kasper Skytte, is responsible for tracking CO2 emissions and quotas。 His daughter, Iben, is a good friend of Oscars。 There is a body in the trash claw apparatus。 Lots of interesting information on recycling and emissions。Oscar's parents, Malin and Henrik Dreyer-Hoff, run Nordhjem’s auctions。 There is plenty of family drama, shady business dealings, and siblings with their own hidden secrets。 Jeppe and Anette follow leads and conduct repeated interviews to find Oscar。 There are many secrets, lies and omissions which hinder them at every turn。 Finding Oscar alive seems unattainable。Esther de Laurenti is still attempting to write her novel。 She and Jeppe continue to keep in touch while Gregers health deteriorates。 The author keeps the characters interesting by including details of their relationships, love life, kids, and everyday struggles outside the job。The investigation leads Korner and Werner down a path of dark subject matter, unexpected twists and an unpredictable conclusion。This is number 4 in the Korner and Werner series, (not three as listed on Amazon)。 It is correctly listed on Goodreads。 I highly recommend all in the series, wish the second would be translated, and would certainly read next in series。Many thanks to NetGalley, Katrine Engberg and to Galley Press for the advance digital copy of "The Harbor"。 These are my personal thoughts and opinions given voluntarily。 。。。more
Kasey,
2。5 stars rounded up。This book needs trigger warnings! Had I known them, I would not have requested to review this。 I've added triggers under spoilers, below。Going in, I was not aware it was part of a series。 Even so, this book still worked as a standalone title。 However, I could not connect with the characters as much as I might have if I had read the entire series。 There were also a handful of characters introduced relatively quickly。 (Again, maybe if I had read the other books, I would have b 2。5 stars rounded up。This book needs trigger warnings!
